Historic Civil Rights Tour

This one-of-a-kind tour begins at the main entrance to BCRI, allows visitors to experience the culture and history of Birmingham’s Historic Civil Rights and Fourth Avenue Business District.

The tour of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute will be a self-guided, multi- media experience, lasting an average of 1½ hours. Your guests will first view an 8-minute video that presents the birth of Birmingham and then begin your tour in the permanent exhibition. The exhibition is a self-directed journey from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and ’60s to the human rights struggles of today.

Guests will then take a walk through Kelly Ingram Park, which fittingly begins with an Anne Frank quote, because this spot, along with the 16th Street Church across the street, are historically tragic cousins we should never, ever forget. The iron sculpture of the police dogs is spine chilling.

The tour will end at the site of a tragic bombing that represented one of the pivotal points of the Civil Rights Movement. Your guests will have the opportunity to visit the Historic Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, which holds a significant place not only in Alabama history, but also in United States history and even around the world.

Going on a Historic Civil Rights Tour sounds like something I would like.
